ACA Health Insurance Subsidies Explained: Do You Qualify in 2026?
Licensed Insurance Agent · May 17, 2026
You Might Be Paying Too Much for Health Insurance
If you buy health insurance on the Marketplace (HealthCare.gov), there’s a good chance you qualify for a subsidy that lowers your monthly premium — sometimes to $0.
These subsidies are called Premium Tax Credits (PTCs), and they’re still available for 2026. The temporary “enhanced” subsidies expired at the end of 2025, though, so most people get somewhat less help than before and the 400% income cap is back.
Yet millions of eligible Americans either don’t know they qualify or don’t claim the full amount.
How Premium Tax Credits Work
The ACA caps how much you’re expected to pay for the “benchmark” (second-lowest Silver) plan based on your income:
| Household Income (% of FPL) | Max % of Income for Premiums | If Income Were $40,000/yr |
|---|---|---|
| Under 133% FPL | 2.10% | About $70/month |
| 133% – 150% FPL | 3.14% – 4.19% | About $105 – $140/month |
| 150% – 200% FPL | 4.19% – 6.60% | About $140 – $220/month |
| 200% – 250% FPL | 6.60% – 8.44% | About $220 – $281/month |
| 250% – 300% FPL | 8.44% – 9.96% | About $281 – $332/month |
| 300% – 400% FPL | 9.96% | About $332/month |
| Above 400% FPL | No tax credit | You pay the full premium |
Who Qualifies for ACA Subsidies?
You may qualify if:
- ✅ You buy coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace (not employer plans)
- ✅ Your household income is above 100% of the Federal Poverty Level
- ✅ You’re not eligible for Medicare (under 65 and not disabled)
- ✅ You’re not offered affordable employer coverage (costing less than 9.96% of household income in 2026)
- ✅ You file taxes (married couples must file jointly)
