Turning 65? Your Complete Medicare Checklist

A step-by-step timeline of everything you need to do before, during, and after your 65th birthday to set up your Medicare coverage correctly.

Your Medicare Timeline

Turning 65 is exciting โ€” but it also comes with one of the most confusing bureaucratic processes in America: signing up for Medicare. This checklist walks you through everything in the right order so you don’t miss deadlines, face penalties, or end up with gaps in coverage.

๐Ÿ“… 6 Months Before Your 65th Birthday

1
Decide if you need Part B now or later
If you’re still working and have employer health insurance (from a company with 20+ employees), you may be able to delay Part B without penalty. If you’re retiring or your employer has fewer than 20 employees, you should sign up for Part B.
2
Contact Social Security
If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll be auto-enrolled in Part A and Part B. If not, you need to actively sign up at ssa.gov or your local Social Security office.
3
Start researching your options
You have two paths: Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D, or Medicare Advantage. Read our MA vs. Medigap comparison to understand the tradeoffs.
4
Talk to an independent agent
Don’t rely on TV ads or the Medicare.gov plan finder alone. An independent agent (like us) can compare plans across carriers and find the best fit for your doctors, medications, and budget โ€” at no cost to you.

๐Ÿ“… 3 Months Before Your Birthday (IEP Opens)

5
Enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B
Sign up at ssa.gov, by phone (1-800-772-1213), or at your local Social Security office. Applying in the 3 months BEFORE your birthday gives you the earliest possible coverage start date.
6
Choose your path: MA or Original Medicare + Medigap
This is the big decision. Review your doctors, medications, travel plans, and budget. We can run a personalized comparison for you at no cost.
7
If choosing Medigap: Apply for your plan NOW
Your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment starts when Part B begins. Apply early to lock in the best rates with guaranteed issue. Don’t wait until the last month.
8
Enroll in Part D (if going with Original Medicare)
You need a standalone Part D plan if you choose Original Medicare + Medigap. If choosing Medicare Advantage, Part D is usually built in.

๐Ÿ“… After Your 65th Birthday

9
Get your Medicare card
Your red, white, and blue Medicare card arrives by mail. Keep it safe โ€” you’ll need your Medicare number for enrolling in additional plans.
10
Notify your current insurance
If you’re leaving employer coverage, coordinate the transition so there’s no gap. Get a letter confirming your creditable coverage dates โ€” you may need this to avoid late penalties.
11
Review your coverage annually
Every fall during the AEP (October 15 โ€“ December 7), review your plan. Drug formularies, premiums, and networks change every year. What was the best plan last year might not be the best plan this year.

๐Ÿ’ก Don’t Go It Alone: The Medicare maze is deliberately complex. A single mistake โ€” wrong enrollment timing, missing a deadline, choosing the wrong plan โ€” can cost thousands. Working with an independent Medicare agent costs you nothing (we’re paid by the insurance companies, not by you) and can save you from expensive errors.
