Understanding Plan Levels: Bronze to Platinum

All ACA plans cover the same essential benefits. The difference is how costs are shared between you and the plan:

Highest out-of-pocket costs
Best for: Young, healthy people who rarely need care

🥈 Silver

70/30

Plan pays 70% · You pay 30%

Most popular choice
Moderate costs both ways
Best for: Most people — unlocks extra CSR savings

🥇 Gold

80/20

Plan pays 80% · You pay 20%

Higher premiums
Lower costs at the doctor
Best for: Families or those who use care regularly

💎 Platinum

90/10

Plan pays 90% · You pay 10%

Highest premiums
Lowest costs when you use care
Best for: Those with significant ongoing medical needs

Premium Subsidies: You May Qualify for Significant Savings

The Inflation Reduction Act expanded premium tax credits through 2025. More people qualify than ever before — and the savings can be substantial.

Who Qualifies?

Individuals & families with income between 100%–400% of the Federal Poverty Level. With expanded credits, even higher earners may qualify for reduced premiums.

How Much Can You Save?

Savings range from $50/month to $500+/month depending on income and household size. Many qualify for $0 premium plans. Silver plan holders under 250% FPL also get Cost Sharing Reductions (CSR).

ACA Health Insurance: Frequently Asked Questions

What is ACA health insurance?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) created the Health Insurance Marketplace where individuals and families can buy health insurance plans that meet federal standards. All ACA plans cover 10 essential health benefits including hospitalization, prescriptions, maternity care, mental health, and preventive services.

Who qualifies for ACA health insurance?

U.S. citizens and legal residents who are not incarcerated and don’t have Medicare. There’s no age limit (under 65, though — over 65 is typically Medicare). ACA plans are especially important for people who don’t have employer-sponsored insurance.

How much does ACA insurance cost?

It depends on your income, age, location, household size, and the plan level you choose (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum). Premium tax credits (subsidies) can dramatically reduce your cost — many people qualify for $0 or very low premiums. We’ll calculate your subsidy during our consultation.

When is ACA Open Enrollment?

The annual Open Enrollment Period runs November 1 through January 15 (in most states). You can also enroll during a Special Enrollment Period if you experience a qualifying life event like losing other coverage, getting married, having a baby, or moving to a new area.

What are the metal tier plan levels?

Bronze plans have the lowest premiums but highest out-of-pocket costs (plan pays ~60%). Silver plans offer moderate premiums and costs (plan pays ~70%) — and unlock extra savings if your income qualifies. Gold plans have higher premiums but lower costs at the doctor (plan pays ~80%). Platinum plans have the highest premiums but lowest costs when you use care (plan pays ~90%).

Do I qualify for subsidies?

If your household income is between 100% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level, you likely qualify for premium tax credits. The Inflation Reduction Act temporarily expanded subsidies through 2025, so many people who didn’t qualify before now do. We check your eligibility as part of our free consultation.

Can I keep my doctor with an ACA plan?

It depends on the plan’s network. ACA plans use provider networks (HMO, PPO, EPO). We’ll check that your preferred doctors and hospitals are in-network before recommending a plan.

What if I miss Open Enrollment?

Outside of Open Enrollment, you can only enroll with a qualifying life event (job loss, marriage, birth of child, moving, etc.). Otherwise, you’ll need to wait until the next enrollment period. Don’t wait — call us if you think you might qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
