Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Your complete guide to Medicare Advantage plans — what they cover, what they cost, and how to choose the right one for your health and budget.
Find the Right Medicare Advantage Plan
Medicare Advantage bundles your hospital, medical, and usually prescription drug coverage into one plan — often with $0 premiums and extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing. We compare every plan in your area to find the best fit.
Expert Guidance, Zero Cost to You
Our licensed agents are certified every year through AHIP and represent top carriers including UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, and Blue Cross NC. We’re paid by the carriers — our help is always free to you.
Medicare Doesn't Have to Be Confusing
You’ve earned your Medicare benefits — now it’s time to make sure you’re getting the most out of them.
Medicare Advantage (Part C) is chosen by over 50% of Medicare beneficiaries because it bundles everything into one plan: hospital coverage, doctor visits, prescriptions, and extras like dental and vision — often with a $0 monthly premium.
But with dozens of plans available in most areas, choosing the right one matters. The wrong plan could mean higher costs, restricted doctors, or missing coverage for the medications you need.
That’s where we come in. As independent agents, we compare plans from UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Humana, Blue Cross NC, and Alignment Health Plan — so you get unbiased advice, not a sales pitch.
What Medicare Advantage Covers
Medicare Advantage plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers — plus most include these extras:
Hospital & Medical
Inpatient hospital stays, doctor visits, lab work, outpatient surgery — all covered under one plan.
Prescription Drugs
Most MA plans include Part D drug coverage. Check your medications against the plan’s formulary.
Dental & Vision
Routine dental exams, cleanings, vision exams, eyewear allowances — benefits Original Medicare doesn’t offer.
Hearing
Hearing exams and hearing aid allowances — increasingly common in today’s MA plans.
Fitness & Wellness
SilverSneakers, gym memberships, wellness programs, and preventive care at no extra cost.
Transportation & OTC
Rides to appointments, over-the-counter allowances, and meal delivery after hospital stays.
HMO vs. PPO: Which Plan Type Is Right for You?
The two most common Medicare Advantage plan types. Here’s how they compare:
| Feature | HMO | PPO |
|---|---|---|

| Out-of-Network Coverage | ❌ Not covered (except emergencies) | ✅ Covered at higher cost |
| Referrals Needed? | Yes — need PCP referral for specialists | No — see specialists directly |
| Network Size | Smaller, more focused | Larger, more flexible |
| Out-of-Pocket Max | Typically lower | Typically higher |
| Best For | Budget-conscious, one area | Flexibility, travel, multiple doctors |

Medicare Advantage: Frequently Asked Questions
What is Medicare Advantage (Part C)?
Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits. Instead of Original Medicare (Parts A & B), a private insurance company approved by Medicare delivers all your covered services — often including prescription drugs, dental, vision, and hearing — in a single plan.
How much does Medicare Advantage cost?
Many Medicare Advantage plans have $0 monthly premiums (you still pay your Part B premium). Out-of-pocket costs vary by plan and include copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. All plans have a yearly out-of-pocket maximum to protect you from catastrophic costs.
Can I see my current doctor with Medicare Advantage?
It depends on the plan type. HMO plans require you to use in-network providers and get referrals for specialists. PPO plans let you see out-of-network doctors at higher cost. Always verify your doctors and hospitals are in-network before enrolling.
When can I enroll in Medicare Advantage?
You can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (3 months before to 3 months after your 65th birthday), the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7), or the Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) if you’re already in an MA plan. Special Enrollment Periods are available for qualifying life events.
What’s the difference between HMO and PPO Medicare Advantage plans?
HMO plans generally have lower premiums and require you to use in-network providers with referrals for specialists. PPO plans offer more flexibility — you can see any provider, though you’ll pay less for in-network care. PPO plans typically have higher premiums.
Do Medicare Advantage plans cover prescription drugs?
Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage (called MA-PD plans). Check the plan’s formulary to make sure your medications are covered and at what tier/cost.
Can I switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare?
Yes. During the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7), you can disenroll from MA and return to Original Medicare. During the MA Open Enrollment Period (Jan 1 – Mar 31), you can switch to a different MA plan or go back to Original Medicare. If you switch back, you may want a Medigap policy — but guaranteed issue rights may be limited depending on your state.
What extra benefits do Medicare Advantage plans offer?
Many MA plans include benefits Original Medicare doesn’t cover: dental care, vision exams and eyewear, hearing aids, fitness programs (like SilverSneakers), over-the-counter allowances, transportation to appointments, and even meal delivery after hospital stays. Benefits vary by plan and region.
