Guaranteed issue life insurance is the coverage of last resort — and that’s not a bad thing. If you’ve been declined for life insurance because of health problems, guaranteed issue means you can still protect your family. No questions asked. Literally.
But before you buy a guaranteed issue policy, there are important things you need to understand. I’m Michael Cubell with Triangle Life & Health, and I want to make sure you’re getting the right type of coverage.
What Is Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance?
Guaranteed issue is exactly what it sounds like:
- No health questions — none at all
- No medical exam
- Everyone ages 50-85 is accepted — regardless of health conditions
- Permanent coverage — it never expires as long as you pay premiums
- Coverage amounts typically $5,000-$25,000
The Trade-Off: Graded Benefit Period
Because the carrier takes on more risk (they don’t know your health status), guaranteed issue policies have a 2-year graded benefit period:
- Year 1: If you pass away from natural causes, your beneficiary receives a return of all premiums paid plus interest (typically 10%)
- Year 2: Same as year 1 in most cases (some carriers pay 30-50% of benefit in year 2)
- Year 3+: Full death benefit is paid
Important: Accidental death is covered at 100% from day one, even during the graded period.
Guaranteed Issue vs. Simplified Issue — The Cost Difference
| Policy Type | Health Questions | Coverage Start | Cost ($15K, Age 65) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simplified Issue | Yes (8-12 questions) | Day 1 — full benefit | ~$62/mo |
| Guaranteed Issue | None | After 2-year waiting period | ~$95/mo |
That’s roughly 50% more per month for guaranteed issue — and you don’t get full coverage for 2 years. That’s why I always recommend trying simplified issue first.
When Guaranteed Issue Makes Sense
Guaranteed issue is the right choice when:
- You’ve been declined by other carriers
- You have serious health conditions like cancer (active), kidney dialysis, congestive heart failure, or oxygen use
- You’re in a nursing home or assisted living facility
- You want coverage no matter what — and you’re okay with the graded benefit
My Recommendation: Check Simplified Issue First
Here’s what most people don’t realize: many health conditions that seem disqualifying actually aren’t for simplified issue. Diabetes, COPD, heart stents, cancer in remission — many carriers will accept these conditions.
Before you buy a guaranteed issue policy and pay 50% more, let me check if you qualify for simplified issue. It takes 5 minutes, costs nothing, and could save you hundreds of dollars a year.
