Does Medicare Cover Ambulance Rides? (2026)

Short answer: yes, when it’s medically necessary. Part B covers ground ambulance rides when traveling any other way could endanger your health. It can also cover air ambulance and some non-emergency transport.

What You’ll Pay (2026)

With Original Medicare, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after you meet the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026). If the ambulance company doesn’t think Medicare will cover a non-emergency ride, it may ask you to sign an Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN). If you sign it, you could be responsible for the full cost.

With a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, most or all of that 20% can be covered. For example, Plan G pays the Part B coinsurance once you’ve met the Part B deductible. See my Plan G guide.

Ambulance Coverage With Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans must cover medically necessary ambulance services, usually with a set copay per trip that varies by plan. Some plans require prior authorization for non-emergency transport. Non-emergency transportation to doctor appointments (not by ambulance) is a separate extra benefit some plans offer. Compare plans in Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare.
