Does Medicare Cover Dental? What’s Covered and Your Options (2026)
Short answer: mostly no. Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn’t cover most dental care, including cleanings, fillings, extractions, and dentures. There are a few exceptions, plus several ways to get dental coverage.
I’m Michael Cubell, a licensed independent agent with Triangle Life & Health (licensed since 2013, NPN 16899969). I help people in 15 states sort through Medicare every day. Here’s the plain-English version.
Key Points
- ✅ Original Medicare does NOT cover routine dental care: cleanings, fillings, extractions, dentures, or most other dental supplies
- ✅ Medicare may cover dental services closely tied to certain covered medical care, such as a heart valve replacement, an organ transplant, cancer treatment, or dialysis for ESRD
- ✅ Medigap plans don’t include dental coverage
- ✅ Many Medicare Advantage plans include some dental benefits, but coverage levels vary widely
- ✅ Stand-alone dental insurance is an option if you have Original Medicare
What Original Medicare Doesn’t Cover
In most cases, Original Medicare doesn’t pay for the dental care most people need:
- Routine exams and cleanings
- Fillings and extractions
- Root canals and crowns
- Dentures and dental plates
- Most other dental supplies
The Dental Care Medicare Can Cover
Medicare may pay for dental services that are closely related to certain covered medical treatments. Per CMS, examples include dental care connected to:
- A heart valve repair or replacement
- An organ transplant
- Cancer-related treatments
- Dialysis services for End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
If you’re facing one of these treatments, ask your doctor and dentist to coordinate. Whether Medicare pays depends on the details.
Your Options for Dental Coverage
| Option | How it works | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Medicare Advantage with dental | Many plans include preventive dental, and some include more | Annual maximums, networks, and covered services vary a lot by plan |
| Stand-alone dental insurance | A separate policy you add next to Original Medicare + Medigap | Watch waiting periods for major work and annual maximums |
| Dental discount plans | Pay a membership fee for reduced prices at participating dentists | Not insurance, just negotiated discounts |
| Pay as you go | Pay the dentist directly | Ask about cash-pay discounts |
If dental is a big priority, the right answer depends on how much work you expect to need and whether you’d rather keep Original Medicare with a Medigap plan. See Medicare Advantage dental, vision & hearing benefits and Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare.
Tip: Look Past “Includes Dental”
Two plans can both say “dental included” and be completely different. One might cover two cleanings a year. Another might help with crowns and dentures up to a yearly limit. Before you choose, check the annual maximum, whether major services are covered, and whether your dentist is in network.
