Dental & vision coverage

Available under 65 and 65+

Original Medicare covers essentially no routine dental or vision care. A standalone dental and vision policy is the coverage people tend to use every single year.

Why this gap catches people out

People assume that once they are on Medicare, teeth and eyes are handled. They are not. Original Medicare does not cover routine cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures, eyeglasses or contact lenses. Many Medicare Advantage plans include a dental allowance, which is genuinely useful — until a crown or a bridge burns through the annual limit in one appointment.

What a standalone policy covers

  • Preventive dental — exams and cleanings, typically with no waiting period for check-ups
  • Basic and major dental — fillings, extractions, and the expensive work: crowns, bridges, dentures (major services normally carry a waiting period)
  • Vision — eye exams, lenses, frames, and contact lenses
  • One premium for both, and an annual maximum per covered person

Benefits can be paid to you or directly to your dentist or eye doctor, and there is no restrictive network — you keep the dentist you have gone to for twenty years. Coverage is guaranteed renewable at your option, regardless of dental or vision problems that develop later.

How to compare this against a plan allowance

Do not compare premium to premium. Compare the annual maximum and the waiting period on major work against the dental work you already know is coming. If your dentist has mentioned a crown, a policy with a real annual maximum usually wins. If you only ever go for cleanings, an allowance on your existing plan may be enough — and we will say so.

Real-life examples

Dental and vision policies pay a percentage of the bill after a small yearly deductible, up to a yearly maximum. Here is the math, step by step.

James needs a crown

James, 69 · second year with his policy

James has Original Medicare, which doesn’t cover routine dental care. This year he has two cleanings at $120 each, and then his dentist says he needs a crown, which costs $1,200. His policy has a $100 yearly deductible and a $1,500 yearly maximum.

What the policy pays Amount
Cleanings: $240, minus the $100 deductible = $140 × 80% $112
Crown: $1,200 × 60% $720
Policy pays $832

James’s share: $1,440 in total bills minus $832 = $608, instead of the full $1,440. He still has $668 left of his $1,500 yearly maximum.

Maria gets new glasses

Maria, 66 · deductible already met this year

Maria gets her yearly eye exam ($150) and picks out new glasses ($400). Vision pays 80%, with a cap on each item.

What the policy pays Amount
Eye exam: $150 × 80% = $120, capped at $100 $100
Glasses: $400 × 80% = $320, capped at $300 (every 24 months) $300
Policy pays $400

Maria’s share: $550 minus $400 = $150. She used the eye doctor she has seen for years, because there’s no network.

Your actual benefits depend on the plan and options you choose, your state, and the terms, limitations, exclusions and waiting periods in your policy.

Common questions

Is there a waiting period?

Typically none for check-ups and cleanings, and a waiting period for major services like crowns and dentures. The exact periods vary by policy and state.

Can I keep my dentist?

Yes. These policies do not use a restrictive network, so you choose the dentist or eye doctor.

Can I have this and a Medicare Advantage dental allowance at the same time?

Yes, and plenty of people do exactly that — the allowance handles routine visits and the policy takes over when major work exceeds it.

Does it cover implants or orthodontics?

That depends entirely on the policy and the state. Some designs exclude them. Ask before you assume, because this is the most common disappointment in dental coverage.
