Nobody wants to think about funeral costs. But your family will have to pay them. The question is whether they’ll scramble to come up with thousands of dollars during the worst week of their lives — or whether you’ll have it handled.
I’m Michael Cubell with Triangle Life & Health, and I help families figure out the right amount of coverage every day. Here’s a practical breakdown of what things actually cost and how much insurance makes sense.
The Real Cost of Dying in 2026
Traditional Funeral with Burial
| Expense | Average Cost |
|---|---|
| Funeral home services | $2,300 |
| Casket | $2,500 |
| Burial vault | $1,500 |
| Cemetery plot | $1,000–$4,000 |
| Headstone/marker | $1,000–$3,000 |
| Flowers, programs, etc. | $500–$1,000 |
| Total | $7,800–$13,800 |
Cremation with Memorial Service
Cremation is less expensive but still costs more than most people expect:
- Direct cremation: $1,000–$2,500
- Cremation with memorial service: $3,000–$4,500
- Cremation with viewing first: $4,000–$6,000
The Expenses People Forget
The funeral is just the beginning. Your family may also need to cover:
- Outstanding medical bills and copays — $2,000–$10,000+
- Credit card debt — average American carries $6,500
- Final utility bills, rent/mortgage, car payments
- Travel costs for family members attending the funeral
- Time off work for the family member handling arrangements
So How Much Coverage Do You Need?
Here’s my recommendation based on what I see with real families:
- $10,000 — Covers a basic cremation plus some outstanding bills. Minimum I’d recommend.
- $15,000 — Covers a cremation with memorial service plus bills. Most popular choice.
- $20,000 — Covers a traditional funeral with burial and most outstanding expenses.
- $25,000 — Covers everything with a comfortable buffer. Best for peace of mind.
When in doubt, $15,000-$20,000 is the sweet spot for most families. It’s enough to cover the funeral, handle immediate bills, and give your family breathing room.
What This Costs You Per Month
Final expense insurance is surprisingly affordable. Most of my clients pay $30-$70 per month — less than a daily coffee habit. And the premium never goes up. Ever.
