You Might Be Paying Too Much for Health Insurance

If you buy health insurance on the Marketplace (HealthCare.gov), there’s a good chance you qualify for a subsidy that lowers your monthly premium — sometimes to $0.

These subsidies are called Premium Tax Credits (PTCs), and thanks to extended provisions from the Inflation Reduction Act, they’re more generous than ever through 2026.

Yet millions of eligible Americans either don’t know they qualify or don’t claim the full amount.

How Premium Tax Credits Work

The ACA caps how much you’re expected to pay for the “benchmark” (second-lowest Silver) plan based on your income:

Household Income (% of FPL)Max % of Income for PremiumsExample: $40,000 Income
Under 150% FPL0%$0/month — fully subsidized
150% – 200% FPL0% – 2%$0 – $67/month
200% – 250% FPL2% – 4%$67 – $133/month
250% – 300% FPL4% – 6%$133 – $200/month
300% – 400% FPL6% – 8.5%$200 – $283/month
Above 400% FPL8.5% maxNo more than 8.5% of income
💡 Big change: Before the Inflation Reduction Act, subsidies stopped at 400% FPL. Now, no one pays more than 8.5% of income — even higher earners get help if premiums exceed that threshold.
