Understanding Medicare

Medicare can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be. We break down every part so you can make confident, informed decisions about your healthcare coverage.

What Is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). It’s administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and covers hospital stays, doctor visits, prescription drugs, and more.

Medicare has several parts, each covering different services. Understanding what each part covers — and what it doesn’t — is the first step toward finding the right plan for you.

The Four Parts of Medicare

Part A — Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

2025 Deductible: $1,676 per benefit period

Part B — Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, durable medical equipment, and some home health care. You pay a monthly premium, and Part B typically covers 80% of approved services after you meet the deductible.

2025 Premium: $185/month (standard) | Deductible: $257/year

Part C — Medicare Advantage

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies. Includes everything in Part A and Part B, and usually includes Part D (prescription drugs). Many plans offer extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness programs.

Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage

Adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, and some Medicare Private-Fee-for-Service Plans. Offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. If you don’t enroll when first eligible, you may face a late enrollment penalty.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

If you choose Original Medicare (Part A + Part B), you’ll still have out-of-pocket costs — deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy helps cover those gaps.

Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government (Plans A through N), so benefits are the same regardless of which insurance company sells them. The difference is in the premium, customer service, and financial strength of the carrier.

Who Is Eligible for Medicare?

🎂 Turning 65? — You’re eligible for Medicare starting 3 months before your 65th birthday. Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) lasts 7 months total.

♿ Under 65 with a Disability? — If you’ve received Social Security disability benefits for 24 months, you automatically qualify for Medicare.

🏥 End-Stage Renal Disease? — Individuals with ESRD (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant) qualify for Medicare at any age.

💼 Still Working at 65? — If you have employer coverage, you may be able to delay enrollment without penalty. We’ll help you understand the rules.

Key Medicare Enrollment Periods

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

7-month window around your 65th birthday (3 months before, your birthday month, and 3 months after). This is the best time to enroll.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

October 15 – December 7 each year. Switch Medicare Advantage plans, change Part D drug plans, or go back to Original Medicare.

Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

January 1 – March 31 each year. If you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different MA plan or return to Original Medicare + Part D.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)

Triggered by qualifying life events — losing employer coverage, moving to a new area, qualifying for Extra Help, and more.
